Antioxidant supplements bad for you?
I pick up old magazines from the library to cut pictures out of and I happened to notice this little article while flipping through an old issue of Good Housekeeping (September 2007 issue).

Rethinking a "Miracle Pill"

Antioxidant supplements, once hailed as a frontline defense against cancer and heart disease, aren't living up to their hype. A review of 68 studies showed no evidence that supplements of beta-carotene and vitamins A and E are beneficial; in fact, they seem to increase the risk of mortality. Vitamin C pills neither helped nor harmed. But a daily  multivitamin is still OK. Most of these studies involved far higher doses of antioxidants than you'd find in a standard formula.

Mouthwash
i'm scared to death of vomiting, and i was very excited to make my own mouthwash with peroxide and water, until i learned that if you accidentally swallow any, it will make you vomit like crazy.

i would really rather not take that chance. (although i've never swallowed mouthwash in the past)

But i need a mouthwash that i can make at home that has some serious cleansing and inflammation reducing power. i'm working with my dentist to get my mouth into much better shape, but i want to do all i can at home, as naturally as i can, to help that process along.

What, if anything, can i use in my own mouthwash that works as well as peroxide without the vomit factor? If i go ahead and use peroxide, and at some point accidentally swallow some, will the illness it causes stop quickly, or what? Will i need to call poison control, or is it no big deal?

Sorry to ask such odd questions, and i know my concern may seem silly, but for me, it matters.
Thank you very much for your help.

sprouts
I'd like to start sprouting beans and have a couple questions...

Can I just buy regular beans at the store and start those or do they have to be a certain kind?
Do I keep them in sunlight?
Anyone have any good recipes for sprouting your own beans? Favorite kinds to sprout?

Thanks!

Refilling Printer Cartridges
In a continued effort to cut down on the amount of garbage I produce, I've been looking into getting my printer ink cartridges refilled as opposed to buying new ones.  The results have been disasterous to say the least and just as wasteful because the refilled cartridges print irregularly or so faintly that I have to REPRINT my school assignments, wasting paper.

Has anyone had better luck or a better solution to this problem?

Perennial and medicinal plants for GA, USA
I just relocated from RI, USA to Georgia, USA, which is quite a difference in climate! I've gone from recognizing 75% of the plants and trees where I live, and knowing which ones were good for medicine or natural dyeing, to "Um, that one's a palm tree? And that has Spanish moss on it?"

I just moved into downtown Savannah and am blessed with a teeny little garden. It's mostly overgrown with lantana at the moment. The landlord says that he chose to plant it because it's drought resistant, but that I can take it out and play with the garden as much as I want. I'm looking for web resources, SPECIFIC books, or just personal experience on what plants are best suited to this climate. I'd rather raise things that are naturally suited to the area than fight it, you know? Can anyone recommend web resources or SPECIFIC books or even know of a good nursery in the Savannah area that focus on plants like this? Native plant resources would be even cooler! ETA: I've hit up the library already to try to learn about the trees of the area to start, but at least for that subject, the only books that looked like what I wanted were not that helpful. One was too unscientific for plant ID and one was so scientific that I have to look up half the words to tell me what it's looking for and I had thought I was more familiar with plant terminolgy for most! Hence looking for specific resources of knowledge that a member might recommend.

Also, any books or personal knowledge about medicinal plants that grow wild here? I really miss being in a place where yarrow grows for free in abundance...

big or small flat?
Hello everybody ^_^
My fiance and I are planning to get married and are looking for a house. We live in north Italy (I in a small village, he in a small town) in a mountain area, where the house prices are insane and buying land is not an option.
Given our present financial situation, we could afford a new flat with 2 bedroom and living room with no separate kitchen and hopefully a small garden beside. New flat means high energy efficiency.
At the same price we could buy a 20-year old flat with 3 bedrooms, living room and separate kitchen, 2 bathrooms and some garden. 'oldish' flat means more space but the risk of renovation to be done in short time.
Energetic efficiency is important for the two of us, but we plan to have children and space could become important as well.
How much does space mean for 'natural living'?
What about the garden?
My mother presses me to choose space, my fiance's mother tells that extra space is useless.

We are also considering renting for a short time, while we make out our mind about what we really need, even if everyone here thinks that renting is like wasting one's money.

Any advice?
Thank you in advance.

What are some natural ways to clear my head?
Just last month I got my first tension headache. The throbbing headache lasted seven days.

I am exercising, eating whole foods and also taking frequent warm baths to try to unwind (quit drinking coffee/espresso). Yet I cannot for the life of me relax.

I have always been high strung. In the most difficult situations exercise has helped me. As of late nothing helps. I have heart palpitations every night. I feel like committing social suicide and just hide under a rock for a few years. I know this might be depression and has a lot to do with my job. Regardless I have to stick with this job till the end of next year. This is the first job I have been stable and had a ‘future’.

I already have plans on seeing the doctor next month. But before then what are some natural options for me? I really do not want to take medication. Maybe I am lacking vitamins? Is there a miracle oil to chill me out? Pep talking to myself is not working any longer.

Emulsifier - Lotion/Cream Recipe - Help?

The only things I have that could be used as natural emulsifiers are lanolin and vegetable glycerin. I tried making a cream or lotion by using a recipe as a guideline and subsituting, but succeeded only in making pretty rose-colored water with globules floating in it. Does anyone have a recipe using  just the emulsifiers I have, oil (such as apricot kernel, olive, or castor), and essential oils? I do have a teeny bit of cocoa and shea butter left, if you have recipes including those. And if you had measurements like teaspoons and cups as opposed to grams (I don't have a scale), that would be wonderful. Please help me, I've looked everywhere - memories in multiple communities, Google, Scour using every search word I could think of - but to no avail. Thank you so much!

guide to eco-friendly, toxin-free lunch stuff
Because I'd been getting a lot of comments lately about my To-Go Ware food canister (I'd bought it a few months ago but didn't start using it until recently), I decided to write a massive post in my LJ about all the stuff I've found and what I think of them while shopping around for eco-friendly lunch stuff.

You can find the whole post here. (Most of my LJ is friends only now, but this post is unlocked for future reference.)

I know there have been past posts asking for this kind of info, so I hope that this is helpful. (^.^) I used a link instead of x-posting because, like I said, the post is MASSIVE.

Need energy boost
Right now I drink coffee to keep me awake during the day which works great. But at night, sometimes I really want to stay up late and study. I dont usually make it past 1am and I'll get really tired. Is there anything which can give me energy boost just for a few hours?
A long time ago, someone else on another forum mentioned taking some kinda herb or supplement which kept her awake. I dont remember what it is but it started with the letter C?

Need food suggestions to aid in digestion
I have a particular problem. Recently I was diagnosed with gastroparesis, which means my stomach doesn't digest, move, or empty food. Instead I throw it up. Yes, this is life -threatening. My medication works only so-so and I was hoping for a more natural help. I was hoping some of you could help me with suggestions:
1. Herbs/foods that aid in digestion. I use ginger to help with nausea already, and I noticed that spicy food digests easy, which I think is because of soemthing in the peppers. Anyone hear about peppers making food digest faster?
2. Food that is easy to digest. I'm already avoiding high-fiber foods, chewing a lot, and eating things like applesauce and smoothies when it's acting up more than normal. I'd like to continue eating non-pre-chewed food as much as possible. I cook almost all of my own food from scratch or near that as is.

Here's the kicker. I can't eat:
Wheat, oats, rye, barley, peanuts, cashews at all even in tiny ammounts.
and I can only eat small quantities of hard, fiberous foods like lettuce, uncooked vegetables, corn, etc.
Also, most of the standard suggestions for vomiting are exactly the wrong thing for me. I consistantly throw up banannas, rice, and bland foods.
